NAN DALY:
MIXED MEDIA TECHNIQUES FOR WATERCOLOR
ELLIS HOUSE: OCTOBER 5 & 6, 11-5:30
In this two-day workshop we will learn Paul Gauguin’s printing technique, create a unique color palette, design repeat patterns, and relax with a medi- tative painting project.
Day 1—Color Palettes & Gauguin’s Trace Monotypes
-
Painting Vessels: Develop a unique color scheme with Nan’s guid- ance, then design decorative patterns inspired by magazine images (bring some or look through examples). Then paint your patterns on a a still life of vessels (pitchers, vases, teapots, etc.). Nan will supply silhouettes of ves- sels to copy. Your painting will be whimsical, unique, wholly invented by you. And you will experience new ways of working with your paint palette!
-
Gauguin’s Trace Monotype Technique: Use Masa paper (provided) on which you can print your composition and paint with watercolor. This technique makes fascinating lines and works well with florals. Plus we will also work with collage paper and try a print with that as well.
Day 2—Gauguin’s Trace Monotypes cont’d & Neurographic Drawing
1.Complete your Gauguin’s Trace Monotype
2.Neurographic Drawing: Experiment with this drawing technique and use it to paint a sea creature or bird (or any subject, really) with a stained glass effect. This is a relaxing, meditative exercise that produces attractive creations. No pressure.
All of these techniques can be incorporated into your usual work and sub- jects, whether representational or abstract.
In addition to your regular watercolor supplies, you will need to bring:
Reference photos of flowers, sea creatures or birds
Colorful magazines for inspiration.
Watercolor paper: 140 lb Cold Press - one sheet 16x20 or smaller,
one sheet 8x10 and one sheet 5x7
(This is the minimum your'll need, bring extra
Masking tape
You will receive your Workshop Kie
Nan will supply silhouettes of vessels, Masa paper, palette paper, paint retarder, some magazines and photo references, and examples of each pro- ject. The projects are very different, one from another, and your weekend should be fun and adventurous.
